英和対訳『ポー短編集』（旺文社英文学習ライブラリー、昭和34年）という本を利用して、ポー『黒猫』を読んでみた。犬だと怖くないのに、猫は怖く感じられるのは不思議。PERVERSENESS（つむじ曲がり）についての描写が、全編のテーマとも関わって興味深い*1（"Who has not, a hundred times, found himself committing a vile or a silly action, for no other reason than because he knows he should not? Have we not a perpetual inclination, in the teeth of our best judgement, to violate that which is Law, merely because we understand it to be such?")。再び拾った猫が、昼も夜もまとわりついて男を苦しめるシーンに笑った。
